Najmul Hossain Shanto has officially stepped down as the Test cricket captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team, citing the need for team clarity and improved leadership structure.
Shanto made the announcement at a press conference following India’s loss to Sri Lanka in the Colombo Test on Saturday, where he addressed the media with composure and clarity.
“I have decided to step down as Test captain of the Bangladesh team,” Shanto stated. “I don’t want to continue in this role. This is not a personal decision but one I believe is best for the team.”
He emphasized that the move is aimed at strengthening the team’s overall dynamics and reducing the pressure associated with having multiple leadership roles in different formats.
“I want to make it very clear—this is not about any personal issue or internal conflict. I genuinely believe that having three captains across formats can complicate team cohesion. So, for the betterment of the team, I’ve chosen to step aside from Test leadership,” he said.
Shanto’s resignation comes amid a transitional phase for Bangladesh cricket, as selectors and management seek consistency and focus in leadership ahead of upcoming international assignments.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is expected to announce the next Test captain soon.
