Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz is battling a fever just two days before the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, head coach Phil Simmons said on Sunday, raising uncertainty over the team’s final combination.
Miraz, who plays a key role with both bat and ball, missed the Tigers’ first practice session at the Galle International Stadium after falling ill.
“The last update this morning is that he’s been a lot better over the last couple of days,” Simmons told reporters after training. “We’ll see how he is this evening after medication. Hopefully he will be able to practice tomorrow and be ready.”
His potential absence could force changes in Bangladesh’s balance, especially in the spin department where Miraz is a key figure alongside left-armer Taijul Islam.
“Yes, it definitely adds a bit of concern,” Simmons said. “But one man’s trouble is another man’s opportunity. If he doesn’t play, someone else has to step up.”
Simmons said no decision had been made yet on the playing XI and that the team would assess pitch conditions again on Monday before finalizing their combination.
The Galle pitch traditionally offers turn, but heavy rain in recent days has added further uncertainty over conditions.
Bangladesh begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday as part of the new World Test Championship cycle.
