Prabath Jayasuriya bowled a slightly tossed-up delivery, and Tony de Zorzi attempted a slog. However, he failed to time the ball properly on the delivery outside the off-stump. The ball went high in the air, and the fielder at deep backward square leg safely pouched it, breaking South Africa’s opening partnership. With that, the left-arm Sri Lankan spinner etched his name in the record books.
Proteas opener Tony de Zorzi became Jayasuriya's 100th victim in Test cricket. Among left-arm bowlers, no one has reached 100 wickets in fewer matches than him.
Jayasuriya began the Durban Test with 97 wickets in 16 matches. The 33-year-old spinner picked up two wickets in the first innings and didn’t take long to reach the milestone in the second innings.
The previous record for the fastest to 100 wickets among left-arm bowlers was held by England's Colin Blythe, who achieved it in 19 matches. Jayasuriya broke that record.
Across all bowlers, only England's George Lohmann(right-hand fast bowler) has reached 100 Test wickets in fewer matches, achieving the feat in his 16th Test against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1896.
