Bashundhara Shuvosangho has extended humanitarian assistance to an ailing and financially struggling man in Kauargola village under Adamapur union in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar, highlighting the ongoing mental health and poverty challenges in rural communities.
The victim, Kaiyum Mia, 50, has been suffering from deteriorating physical and mental health for the past three months. He was initially taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital with the help of relatives and locals, where doctors prescribed medication. However, due to financial hardship, his family could not continue the treatment.
As his mental condition worsened, Kaiyum Mia has been kept chained on the veranda of his home for the past three months. According to family members, they were compelled to take this step as his behavior became increasingly erratic, leading him to damage household items and sometimes pose a risk to himself.
His wife, Jahanara Begum, said the family is struggling to survive. “We are living in extreme hardship. We cannot even afford proper meals, let alone my husband’s treatment,” she said, adding that although they recently consulted a mental health specialist with the help of relatives and neighbours, they could not afford the prescribed medicines.
Upon learning about the situation, members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Kamalganj upazila unit, led by its advisor and local correspondent of Kaler Kantho, Mostafizur Rahman, visited the family. Later, on Thursday afternoon, they provided financial assistance to Kaiyum Mia’s wife at their residence.
In response to the organisation’s call, local rural physician Ashikur Rahman and young social worker Mohammad Wasid also contributed medicines and financial support.
Expressing her gratitude, Jahanara Begum said emotionally, “I have been going through immense hardship with my sick husband. I am thankful to Allah for this support from Bashundhara Shuvosangho.”
Local residents praised the humanitarian initiative of Bashundhara Shuvosangho. Among those present during the assistance programme were the organisation’s President Shabbir Elahi, social worker MA Wasid, Amir Mia, Saidul Islam Chanchal, and Kamal Hossain, among others.
