Police have said that eight-year-old Ramisa Akhter was raped before she was killed in the capital’s Pallabi area.
The accused, Sohel Rana, confessed to the crime during initial interrogation, police said.
Pallabi Police Station Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman, also the investigation officer of the case, confirmed the matter to the media on Wednesday afternoon.
He said Sohel admitted that he raped the child before killing her.
The body of Ramisa, a second-grade student, was recovered from an apartment in Pallabi Section-11 area on Tuesday morning.
After the murder, the police arrested Sohel Rana's wife Swapna Akhter. Sohel went into hiding, but he was arrested in the evening. Police produced the two accused in court on Wednesday.
According to court sources, Sohel has agreed to give a confessional statement before the magistrate. However, the unidentified accused is still absconding.
Meanwhile, the child's body was handed over to the family today after an autopsy at Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
