Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said there will be no room for extortion involving vehicles transporting sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, warning that the government will take immediate legal action against anyone involved if information is received.
Speaking to journalists after a tree plantation programme at the Jajira end of the Padma Bridge on Monday, he said the government has taken all necessary measures to restore discipline on roads during Eid travel.
Shaikh Rabiul Alam also alleged that no significant development had taken place in the Shariatpur area over the past 18 years. However, he said the BNP government is committed to the development of Shariatpur and the greater Faridpur region.
Referring to railway connectivity, the minister said although a rail line passes through Shariatpur, there is no station in the district, adding that he plans to establish one there.
He also alleged that the previous “fascist government” looted the country in the name of mega projects, claiming that money was spent without proper work being completed.
The minister said the country’s internal financial situation is therefore not in good shape, but the current government is trying to implement priority projects within two and a half months despite limited resources.
