A Dhaka court has fixed June 10 to deliver the verdict in a case filed against cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana Tammi on charges of luring away another man’s wife, adultery and defamation.
After concluding arguments from both sides, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam on Wednesday set the date for the verdict.
During the hearing, the complainant’s lawyer Ishrat Hasan sought the maximum punishment for the accused, while defense counsel Azizur Rahman Dulu pleaded for their acquittal, claiming they are innocent. Both accused were present in court during the proceedings.
The case was filed on February 24, 2021, by Tamima’s former husband Rakib Hasan with a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court.
According to the case statement, Tamima married Rakib on February 26, 2011, and they have an eight-year-old daughter. Tamima works as a cabin crew member. On February 14, 2021, photos of her marriage to Nasir went viral on social media, which drew Rakib’s attention.
The complaint alleges that Tamima married Nasir while her marriage with Rakib was still valid, making it illegal under religious and state laws. It also accuses Nasir of luring Tamima away, causing severe mental distress to Rakib and their daughter, and damaging his reputation.
On February 9, 2022, the court framed charges against Nasir and Tamima, initiating the trial, while Tamima’s mother, Sumi Akter, was acquitted from the case.
Later, on February 28, 2023, Dhaka’s Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Murshid Ahmed rejected revision petitions from both sides and ordered the trial to continue, upholding the acquittal of Sumi Akter.
Testimonies in the case concluded on April 16, with statements from 10 witnesses recorded. The accused gave their statements on March 10, and after the defence concluded its arguments on April 8, the court set May 6 for final arguments before fixing the verdict date.
