At least four individuals were killed and several others injured in separate lightning strikes across three upazilas in Sunamganj during a Nor’wester on Saturday afternoon.
Two killed in Dharmapasha
Habibur Rahman (22) and Rahmat Ullah (13) were killed in lightning strikes in Dharmapasha upazila.
Deceased Habibur was the son of Fazlu Rahman of Baraihati village under Paikurati union and a second-year undergraduate student of Badshaganj Degree College. The other deceased, Rahmat Ullah, was the son of Zainal Haque of Saraswatipur village under Joysree union.
Habibur went to harvest Boro paddy with his uncle in Chakiyachapur village near Togar haor. He and several others were struck by lightning during a sudden storm around noon. He was taken to Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
In a separate incident in Saraswatipur Islampur village under Joysree union, lightning injured Zainal Haque, his son Rahmat Ullah and Shikha Moni, wife of Lal Sadhu. Rahmat Ullah was declared dead after being taken to hospital, while the injured Zainal Haque and Shikha Moni were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
One killed in Jamalganj
Farmer Nuruzzaman died after being struck by lightning in Chanpur village under Jamalganj Sadar union. He came under the strike while cutting paddy in Pagnar haor.
Later, he was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. His cousin was also seriously injured and sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
One killed in Dirai
Farmer Liton Mia (38) of Perua Ashnabaj village in Dirai upazila died after being struck by lightning while cutting paddy in a beel of Kaliagota haor. Locals took him to Dirai Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Sarker said four deaths from lightning strikes were reported in different upazilas of the district. Family members were preparing for the burial of the bodies.
