BNP Chairman's advisor and former opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Faruque MP said that the government's efforts to implement the pre-election manifesto within just two months of its formation have created trust among the people.
He expressed hope that this trust will increase further in the future and that undemocratic activities will never happen in the country again.
He said this at a program organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Motorist Party at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday.
Faruque said, “The government has started working on implementing various promises as per the people's expectations. If the government continues to work in this way, people's trust in the government will increase day by day.”
Recalling the contribution of BNP founder martyr President Ziaur Rahman, he said that Ziaur Rahman provided direction to the nation by declaring independence during the country's critical period in 1971, which later accelerated the liberation war.
Besides, praising the leadership of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he said that despite various conspiracies and adversities, she kept the party organized and continued the movement for democracy.
Faruque said, “Ziaur Rahman's ideology inspired him to survive in politics.”
He mentioned that after Zia's death, Khaleda Zia took over the leadership of the party and continued the struggle for democracy despite various adversities and became the Prime Minister three times.
Regarding the current leadership, Faruque said, “Under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the party and the government are working for the development of the country and establishment of democracy.
He expressed hope that by implementing the promises of the election manifesto step by step, the living standards of the people will improve, unemployment will decrease and the overall development of the country will be ensured.
He also said that there had been incidents of disappearances, murders and political torture in the past and those involved in these incidents need to be brought to justice. He also mentioned that BNP has always played a role in protecting democracy, people's rights and the country's independence and sovereignty.
He alleged that there have been attempts to obstruct democracy in the country at various times and opposition leaders and activists have been tortured. Referring to missing BNP leader Elias Ali, he said that there are allegations that he was abducted because of his association with the movement for democracy and rights.
The meeting, chaired by the organization's president Selim Reza Babu and moderated by general secretary Shipon Bakaul, was also attended by Matsyajibi Dal central member Ismail Hossain Siraji and leaders at various levels of the organization.
