The seven-day ‘Baishakhi Mela 1433’, jointly organized by the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and Bangla Academy, was inaugurated on Tuesday with a call for unity and collective progress.
Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, who attended the opening ceremony as chief guest, said the country must move forward through inclusiveness rather than division.
“The Bengali New Year represents our tradition, culture and communal harmony. Leaving behind past divisions and misinformation, people have participated spontaneously in this festival. Bangladesh has now become a land of celebrations, and we believe the country will progress with the participation of all,” he said.
He added that such events play a vital role in showcasing the nation’s art, culture and heritage on the global stage.
Industries Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir attended the event as special guest and praised BSCIC’s contribution to the growth of small and cottage industries. He also highlighted government initiatives aimed at further strengthening the sector.
Among the invited guests were Industries Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman and Cultural Affairs Secretary Kaniz Mawla. Bangla Academy President Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque was also present.
The event was presided over by Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam.
The week-long fair will feature a wide range of locally produced goods, including handicrafts and traditional items, alongside cultural performances. Organizers expect a large number of visitors each day, as the fair remains open to all.
