No political maneuvering will be tolerated over the July Charter, Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni said on Friday, reaffirming his party’s commitment to fully implement the document.
He made the remarks at a discussion meeting organised by a cultural group at the National Press Club, marking Independence and National Day.
Moni said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) supports the July Charter and is committed to implementing it in full. He added that Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has already pledged to carry out its provisions.
According to the Chief Whip, the party has taken responsibility for implementing the charter following its electoral mandate. He criticised opposition parties for shifting positions on key issues, including demands for local government elections, reforms, and constitutional changes, describing these as reactions to electoral defeat.
He also referred to earlier demands for a proportional representation (PR) system, noting that such a system is not widely practiced in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, or neighboring India. He said the government had made it clear that elections could not be delayed to accommodate what it considered unreasonable demands.
On the July Charter itself, Moni said the BNP had not opposed it but had raised certain objections, which were incorporated into the final document. He added that the charter would be implemented through a structured process, with detailed discussions to take place in parliament.
Praising the party leadership, he said the government aims to ensure fundamental rights and deliver effective governance under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.
