The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has increased the supply of fuel to petrol pumps under the rationing system. Earlier, fuel supply had been reduced by 25 percent, but the reduction has now been eased to 15 percent.
BPC announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the move aims to maintain adequate fuel supply across the country amid the ongoing global crisis. Under the new directive, petrol pumps in divisional cities will now receive fuel—specifically octane and petrol—with a 15 percent reduction from average sales, instead of the previous 25 percent cut. Fuel will be supplied to each filling station based on an allocation chart.
BPC also requested depot superintendents, sales officials, and dealers or agents of its marketing companies to take necessary measures to ensure fuel supply according to the revised allocation.
Petrol pumps across the country began selling fuel under a rationing system from Sunday following government instructions, after tensions escalated in the Middle East following attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran. The move was taken to prevent any long-term fuel shortage in the country.
The announcement initially triggered panic among vehicle owners, leading to large crowds at petrol pumps as people rushed to buy fuel. Long queues of vehicles were seen at several filling stations.
However, government authorities have repeatedly assured the public that there is no shortage of fuel in the country and that adequate reserves remain available.
