Kolkata police have arrested two suspects, including the main accused shooter Faisal Karim Masud, in connection with the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The arrests were made by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police.
The suspects were produced before a court on Sunday afternoon, which granted a 14-day remand for interrogation.
According to reports, the STF conducted a raid on Saturday night in the Bongaon area of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, near the Bangladesh border, where the two suspects were detained.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rahul, also known as Rahul alias Faisal Karim Masud, 37, of Patuakhali, and Alamgir Hossain, 34, of Dhaka.
Sources within the STF said that both Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir have confessed to their involvement in the killing of Hadi.
They reportedly entered India through the Meghalaya border and had been staying in various locations for several months.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the arrests were made in West Bengal based on defense intelligence information. The crackdown follows a recent high-level visit by a senior Bangladesh defence intelligence official to India, signaling a toughening stance by Indian authorities against fugitives crossing the border to evade justice.
On December 12 last year, Hadi was shot by assailants in the Paltan area of the capital, Dhaka. He was critically injured in the attack and later died on December 18 while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
