A Supreme Court lawyer on Tuesday filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of the 12 February referendum and seeking cancellation of the results announced a day later.
Advocate ABM Ataul Majid Touhid submitted the public interest petition, naming the Chief Election Commissioner, the Cabinet Secretary and the Law Secretary as respondents.
The High Court bench led by Justice Fatema Najib may hear the petition next week, court sources said.
Voters took part in the nationwide referendum on 12 February, where the proposal for change secured victory. The Election Commission recorded a turnout of 60.26 percent of total votes cast.
On 13 February, Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed announced the results at a briefing at the Election Commission building in Agargaon.
According to the official figures, 48,074,429 voters cast ballots in favour of the proposal, while 22,565,627 voted against it.
