Although they had indicated in the morning that they might not take the oath, the newly-elected MPs of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami eventually took the oath as Members of Parliament in the afternoon.
The ceremony began shortly before 12:30pm on Tuesday in the oath room of the National Parliament building.
The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Afterwards, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the newly elected MPs.
Earlier in the morning, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher told the media that if the newly elected MPs of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) did not take oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council, then Jamaat’s elected MPs would not take any oath.
However, he had also said they would attend the oath ceremony scheduled for 12:00 pm.
At the scheduled time in the afternoon, Jamaat MPs arrived at the oath room in the Parliament building and took the oath.
