Newly elected BNP lawmakers were sworn in as members of the 13th National Parliament on Tuesday morning at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. However, the party has announced that it will not take oath as members of the proposed Constitutional Reform Council.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed made the remarks to reporters around 10:45 am after the oath-taking ceremony at the National Parliament Building.
Salahuddin Ahmed said, “Although there is an oath form for the Constitutional Reform Council, none of us (BNP) has been elected as a member of the Constitutional Reform Council. Besides, the matter has not been included or enshrined in the constitution yet.”
Referring to the constitutional process, he said, “If the Constitutional Reform Council is formed according to the referendum verdict, it must first be enshrined in the constitution. At the same time, provisions must also be made for who will administer the oath to the members of the Constitutional Reform Council.”
This senior BNP leader further said, “There is no provision in the constitution for the oath of the Constitutional Reform Council. We have followed the constitution so far, and we will continue to do so in the days ahead.”
Earlier, the newly elected MPs of the 13th Parliament took the oath at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday morning.
