All 296 newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad will take oath at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban today.
According to a press release from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, the lawmakers will first be sworn in as MPs and subsequently as members of the Constitutional Reform Council. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin is expected to administer the oath at the Oath Room of the Sangsad Bhaban at 10:00am, while Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani will conduct the ceremony.
Lawmakers elected from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including party Chairman Tarique Rahman, will take oath first. They will be followed by MPs from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlish, Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Ganosamhati Andolon and independent members.
According to official results, the BNP secured 209 seats. Its alliance partners — Gano Odhikar Parishad and Bangladesh Jatiya Party — won one seat each, while Ganosamhati Andolon also gained representation. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the main opposition party with 68 seats. Its allies — National Citizen Party (six seats), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis (two) and Khelafat Majlish (one) — also won seats. Islami Andolon Bangladesh secured one seat, while independent candidates were elected in seven constituencies.
Earlier, the Election Commission published the gazette for 297 of the 299 parliamentary seats. Results for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 were withheld due to legal complications, while voting in Sherpur-3 was postponed following the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.
Meanwhile, President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to the new cabinet members at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad tomorrow at 4:00pm. Preparations for the ceremony have been underway since Saturday, led by the Cabinet Division and the Parliament Secretariat.
Following the swearing-in of MPs, the BNP Parliamentary Board will meet to elect its parliamentary leader. The leader will then formally seek appointment as Prime Minister from the President, who will first administer the oath to the Prime Minister, followed by ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers.
