The Office of the Chief Advisor has said that relations with India have been balanced during the interim government. It is not possible to make up for the losses of 16 years in 18 months, but the country is now marching towards a democratic future by firmly moving away from authoritarian behavior and systems.
This information was shared in a statement by the Office of the Chief Advisor on Monday.
The statement said that Bangladesh entered a new chapter under the leadership of the young generation who took to the streets against fascism on August 5, 2024.
After 16 years of repression, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus to overcome the crisis through the July mass uprising. At that time, the state was plagued by economic disaster and institutional weakness. Government institutions had collapsed due to long-standing corruption and misrule. The banking sector was devastated by looting and money laundering.
“The people did not have confidence in the law and order forces. There was also distrust in the judiciary. In this context, the interim government formed various reform commissions with experts and, based on their recommendations, as well as on its own initiative, started practical legal and institutional reform activities - the aim of which was to reconstruct the state and re-establish democratic foundations,” the statement mentioned.
Highlighting the various activities of the interim government, the press wing said, “In the last 18 months since taking office, about 130 laws (new and amended) have been enacted and more than 600 executive orders have been issued, which were necessary for institutional reforms. About 84 percent of these have already been implemented.
“Significant progress has also been made in the economy and foreign affairs. As a result of the Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan, about 7,400 Bangladeshi products have received duty-free benefits. Cooperation with China has increased the loan tenure, developed health infrastructure and improved flood forecasting systems. In negotiations with the United States, the tariff rate has been reduced from 37 percent to 20 percent.
“Diplomatic relations with important countries has been strengthened and relations with India have become balanced on the basis of mutual respect.”
