BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has left Bogura-6 constituency for by-election as he is set to take oath as a member of parliament from Dhaka-17 seat on Tuesday.
“We’ve received a letter that BNP chairman Tarique Rahman quits Bogura-6 constituency,” Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told media on Monday.
He said now the process continues to publish a gazette declaring the parliamentary constituency vacant.
Tarique Rahman was elected from two parliamentary seats-Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 in the parliamentary elections held on Thursday last.
According to Article 19(1)(b) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), a person may contest and be elected from multiple seats in a general election, with a maximum of three constituencies allowed. Under Article 19(2), if elected from multiple seats, the individual must submit a written notice within 30 days of the gazette publication specifying which seat they intend to retain.
If the decision is not communicated within the stipulated time, the EC may declare the remaining seats vacant while retaining one. Once a seat is declared vacant, by-elections must be held within 90 days.
