BNP has welcomed the decision to form a shadow cabinet by the opposition, party Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed said.
Speaking to reporters in front of the party’s Gulshan office on Monday, he said the Election Commission holds the mandate to conduct the national and presidential elections. In the absence of a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the Chief Election Commissioner is authorised to administer the oath to lawmakers. Accordingly, the CEC will swear in the MPs tomorrow, he added.
Regarding the oath of the proposed Constitutional Reform Council, Salahuddin said the existing Constitution does not grant the CEC the authority to administer such an oath.
He noted that if the matter is incorporated into the Constitution through an amendment and the designated authority to administer the oath is specified, then the swearing-in of the Constitutional Reform Council could take place.
Another BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said challenges persist across all sectors of the country.
He alleged that the systems of the economy, education and healthcare, among others, have collapsed.
