Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has congratulated BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman as the ‘Future Prime Minister’ of Bangladesh.
He made the remarks in a statement after Tarique Rahman arrived at his residence on Sunday evening. He also referred to the BNP chairman’s arrival to his residence as a ‘historic moment’ for national politics.
In a statement, the Jamaat Ameer said, “I welcome Tarique Rahman’s coming. I hope that through dialogue and responsibility, it will usher in a new chapter of political maturity and mutual respect.”
Expressing his determination to build a fascism-free and sovereign Bangladesh, he said, “I dream of building a Bangladesh that is founded on justice and fairness. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is committed to establishing a prosperous, stable and modern state, which will be run on the basis of democratic values and constitutional rule.”
Regarding the discussion of the meeting, the Jamaat Ameer said, “In our discussion, Tarique Rahman assured that he will take effective steps to prevent post-election violence and any attacks on opposition party activists and minority communities. I applaud this assurance. Our expectation is that no citizen should be subjected to fear or insecurity.”
Clarifying the nature of the relationship with the future government, he said, “We will provide full cooperation to the elected government regarding national interests. However, as an ideological opposition party, we will remain uncompromising in fulfilling our constitutional responsibilities.”
The Jamaat Amer further added, “We will support the government in its public welfare work, but wherever accountability is needed, we will be vocal. Our aim is not to conflict but to correct; not to prevent but to observe. The people of the country expect a parliament that will protect justice and civil rights and move the state forward with stability.”
