Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has said the Election Commission is not showing favour to any party and that no “stage-managed” election is being held in the country.
“There will be no more engineered elections in this country. People must forget the idea of a stage-managed election,” he said.
He made the remarks on Thursday morning while speaking to journalists after casting his vote at Eskaton Garden High School in the capital.
The CEC said the Election Commission had taken all necessary preparations after spending sleepless nights to ensure a free and fair vote.
“A peaceful and festive election is being held across the country. People in villages and towns alike are celebrating the vote festival,” he said.
Nasir Uddin added that Bangladesh has “boarded the train of democracy” and expressed hope that it would reach its destination.
“I feel proud to be able to make my final contribution to the nation. I hope the vote will conclude smoothly. Through this election, I believe public confidence in the Election Commission will be restored,” opined.
The CEC also mentioned that although a few minor incidents occurred outside some polling centres and immediate measures were taken.
He said election officials had been instructed to remain neutral and warned that those who fail to do so would be held accountable.
