As part of the campaign against illegal immigration, 36 more Bangladeshi citizens have been deported from the US. With this, the number of Bangladeshis deported from the US since the beginning of 2025 has reached 293.
36 people, including a woman, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a special US military flight at 12 noon on Tuesday.
According to the information, they went to the US with the dream of a better life abroad by selling their family land and jewelry or taking loans, and some spent even Tk 40 to 45 lakh per person, some Tk 60 to 80 lakh. But their dreams were shattered and they returned empty-handed.
Shariful Hasan, associate director of BRAC's Migration and Youth Platform, said that after reaching the airport at noon, BRAC provided emergency assistance, including transportation, to the returning workers with the help of the Expatriate Welfare Desk and Aviation Security (AVSEC).
Of the 36 returnees, 21 are from Noakhali district, 2 from Laxmipur and one each from Munshiganj, Dhaka, Lalmonirhat, Shariatpur, Barguna, Feni, Sirajganj, Gazipur, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Cumilla, Chattogram and Netrokona districts. This rises the total number of Bangladeshis deported from the US since the beginning of 2025 to 293.
BRAC’s Migration Program spoke to the returnees and learned that most of these 36 people first went to Brazil legally with a Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) clearance. From there, they entered the US illegally via Mexico. Although they applied for asylum in the US, the US administration decided to send them back to Bangladesh after their applications were rejected through a long legal process.
