Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has been provided with a gunman for his personal security.
A senior official of the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the information on Tuesday.
Earlier, on January 12, a letter was sent to the Inspector General of Police requesting the provision of a gunman for Dr Shafiqur Rahman.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that a high level of security risk or threat exists in his case. For this reason, the ministry instructed that necessary measures be taken to appoint a gunman for his personal security and to deploy uniformed armed police at his residence.
Prior to this decision, the Special Branch (SB) of the police conducted a security risk assessment of Dr Shafiqur Rahman and submitted its recommendations to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The decision was taken based on that assessment.
