BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said a new opportunity has emerged for Bangladesh to build a liberal democratic nation.
“People are now hopeful as a path has opened for establishing a liberal democratic Bangladesh,” he said while addressing a programme arranged by BNP for party chairman Tarique Rahman to exchange greetings with journalists.
Fakhrul noted that Tarique Rahman returned from London at a time when the country is facing challenges. “Citizens across Bangladesh are looking to Tarique Rahman with renewed hope, encouraged by his earlier virtual speeches,” he added.
The programme formally began at 11:20 a.m. with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Tarique Rahman arrived at 10:52 a.m., greeting editors and journalists while walking among the tables.
In his inaugural speech, Fakhrul recalled the contributions of the late BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to democracy and the nation, and prayed for her soul’s salvation. Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30 last year.
Fakhrul also paid tribute to the martyrs of various democratic movements and the July 2004 mass uprising, highlighting their role in restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
