Chatra Dal and other student organizations have locked the administrative building demanding the resignation of Chattogram University's (CU) pro-vice chancellor (Education) professor Shamim Uddin Khan over his controversial remarks on the killing of martyred intellectuals in 1971.
On Monday, the leaders and activists of the organizations locked the administrative building at 12 noon.
The Chhatra Dal branch, Democratic Students Council organizer Dhruba Barua, president of Biplobi Chhatra Maitree Jashad Zakir, publicity secretary Mushraful Haque Rakib, member and VP of Atish Dipankar Hall Sangsad Ripul Chakma, joint general secretary of Bangladesh Students Federation Abid Shahriar, organizer of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Chandana Rani, office secretary of Chhatra Union Sheikh Junaid Kabir and organizer of Women's Angan Sumaiya Sikder have expressed solidarity in demanding the resignation of the CU pro-vice chancellor.
Earlier, at a discussion meeting organized by the CU administration on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day on Sunday, professor Shamim Uddin Khan said, "December 16 was the date of surrender. They (Pakistan Army) were preparing to return. There was no guarantee that they would return alive or dead. The idea that the Pakistani army would kill Bangladeshi intellectuals in such a situation is completely absurd.’
He also said, “This is part of an international conspiracy. Intellectuals have been killed with the aim of turning this country into a vassal state of another country.”
This comment by pro-vice-Chancellor professor Shamim Uddin Khan created a strong controversy across the country, including the university. In protest of this comment, various leftist organizations, including the Chhatra Dal, held a protest march and rally at CU last night.
