Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained three more suspects, including the wife and brother-in-law of the prime suspect, in connection with the attempted killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
The arrests were made on Sunday from different areas of Dhaka and Narayanganj.
The detainees are Samia, wife of prime suspect Faisal Karim Masud, his brother-in-law Shipu, and his friend Maria.
Confirming the matter, RAB Media Wing Director Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury said a large number of cheque books signed by Faisal Karim Masud, along with different electronic devices, were recovered during the operation.
After preliminary interrogation, the detainees were handed over to the police for further legal action, he added.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Sunday named Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh as the attackers in the shooting of Osman Hadi, saying Faisal fired the bullets while Alamgir drove the motorcycle.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Ops) SN Nazrul Islam told a press briefing that CCTV footage helped identify the assailants.
Police have blocked the suspects’ passports and alerted the Border Guard Bangladesh to prevent any attempt to flee abroad. Raids are ongoing to apprehend them.
Meanwhile, RAB arrested the owner of the motorcycle, Abdul Hannan, 43, from Mohammadpur on Saturday.
He has been handed over to Paltan police station and placed on a three-day remand by a Dhaka court.
