International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said today that investigation reports and formal charges in several major cases will be submitted to the tribunal this week. He added that the government is taking necessary steps to bring fugitive accused back to the country.
He made the comments after delivering the prosecution’s opening statement in the case against former minister and JSD president Hasanul Haque Inu, who is accused of crimes against humanity for the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July mass uprising.
Referring to Inu’s previous description of the July 24 mass uprising as “so-called,” Tajul Islam said such remarks reflect “audacity” and amount to “contempt of court.”
“The legal provisions available in the trial process may certainly be used,” he said. “But challenging a judicial process and calling the July uprising ‘so-called’ undermines the sacrifices behind it—1,400 blood donations, 25,000 limb losses and countless tears. Such a remark is contempt of court. It is treason. No accused has the right to say this inside the courtroom.”
