Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN) Secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar on Sunday stressed transparency in the election process and the Election Commission to ensure fair polls.
Speaking at a seminar titled “Challenges and Possibilities of the 13th National Election” at the CIRDAP auditorium, he said a non-partisan government is essential for sustainable democracy and credible elections.
Majumdar said politics has turned into a commercial venture, claiming that power now works like a “magic wand,” causing candidates’ assets to multiply beyond what they declare before elections. “If these issues are not addressed, sustainable democracy will remain impossible due to political robbery,” he added.
He warned that people may again take to the streets if a sustainable democratic path does not emerge, though he hoped such a situation would not arise.
Majumdar expressed optimism that political parties would nominate the right candidates and that an impartial election would take place. He said the passage of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and subsequent structural reforms could help pave the way for a democratic transition.
