BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Sunday that intolerance in society is increasing because political tolerance has eroded in the country. He made the remarks at a seminar titled “What to Do to Transition to Democracy” held at the National Press Club, Dhaka.
Rizvi stated that when a political party instructs the administration to align with its directives, it signals “the establishment of another form of fascism.” He argued that democracy has yet to be established in Bangladesh and warned that if citizens fail to secure democratic governance, the country’s sovereignty could be at risk.
He added that intolerance is spreading across society because those responsible for running the state are creating divisions. According to him, the fact that “if one party does politics, others will not even attend its funeral” reflects a deep crisis of democracy.
Rizvi also blamed ousted Prime Minister fascist Sheikh Hasina for what she described as Bangladesh’s democratic decline, claiming that Khaleda Zia never had to flee the country because “she is a pro-democracy activist.”
