The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday urged the interim government to act cautiously amid the ongoing political deadlock, warning that signatories to the July National Charter are not bound by any decision that goes beyond its agreed scope, reports UNB.
“We want to make it clear that if the government announces any decision beyond what is outlined in the July National Charter, none of the signatory parties will be obligated to comply with it,” said BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Mosharraf said any such decision would be the sole responsibility of the government.
“We urge the government to take cautious and responsible steps in this regard,” he added.
The press briefing followed the party’s Standing Committee meeting held on Monday night.
Mosharraf said the July National Charter was signed on October 17, following nearly a year of dialogue between the National Consensus Commission and various political parties. The charter, he said, was finalized through broad consensus, with some dissenting notes, and all signatories committed to implementing it in accordance with the Constitution and national laws.
He also criticized remarks made by some advisers of the interim government suggesting decisions could be taken outside the framework of the charter.
“Such statements are misleading and amount to disregarding the consensus-based decisions previously adopted,” Mosharraf said.
BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Hafizuddin Ahmed were also present at the press conference.
