Jamaat-e-Islami's nayeb-e-amir Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher called BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday afternoon and formally called for talks on the implementation of the July Charter and the referendum issue.
When asked about this, the BNP secretary general said, "We have very clearly informed you of our decision in the party's standing committee meeting yesterday (on Thursday). That is our statement."
He made this comment to reporters after laying wreaths at the grave of martyred President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of National Revolution and Solidarity Day on Friday, November 7, in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of the capital.
Mirza Fakhrul, accompanied by BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, visited the grave of BNP founder President Ziaur Rahman and paid tribute to him by laying a wreath.
On Thursday night, the BNP Standing Committee meeting at its Gulshan office discussed the Jamaat's proposal. In this, the BNP policymakers called on the interim government to implement the issues agreed upon in the July National Charter in accordance with the law and to take sincere and effective measures to hold national elections on time. At the same time, the Standing Committee also called on the government not to raise new questions or create crises in any way to hinder the election process aimed at re-establishing democracy.
After the meeting, it was announced that after long and detailed discussions in the National Consensus Commission, we, as partners, hold all the issues mentioned in the Charter on which the National Consensus has been established, including the Note of Distinction, and was signed through a historic ceremony at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on October 17. And we are committed to implementing it in accordance with the country's constitution and existing laws.
