The body of eminent educationist and literary figure Syed Manzoorul Islam was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Saturday for the public to pay their final respects.
His body arrived at the memorial shortly after 11am, following a brief stop in front of Aparajeyo Bangla at Dhaka University around 10:30am.
At Aparajeyo Bangla, teachers and students from various departments gathered to honour the late academic. Among those present were Professor Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Professor Tazin Aziz Chaudhury, Chairperson of the Department of English; members of the English Alumni Association, and representatives from the Department of Music.
They laid floral wreaths at his coffin as a mark of respect.
Burial at Mirpur intellectuals’ graveyard
Following Zuhr prayers, a namaz-e-janaza will be held at Dhaka University Mosque. His body will then be taken to Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard, where he will be laid to rest.
Syed Manzoorul Islam passed away at Labaid Hospital in the capital on Friday afternoon. Hospital sources said his condition deteriorated in the morning, prompting doctors to place him on life support. He was pronounced dead at around 5pm.
A life of academic excellence
Born on 18 January 1951 in Sylhet, Syed Manzoorul Islam completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in English at Dhaka University. He later earned his PhD from Queen’s University in Canada, focusing on “The Influence of Emanuel Swedenborg’s Philosophy on Yeats’ Poetry.”
A distinguished scholar, he served as a professor of English at Dhaka University for many years and was most recently Professor Emeritus in the department. His contributions to literature and education have left a lasting legacy in Bangladesh.
