Intense sounds of intermittent gunfire from inside Myanmar have been echoing across the Ghumdhum border area of Naikhongchhari in Bandarban and the Ukhiya Upazila of Cox’s Bazar, triggering panic among locals.
Residents reported hearing the gunfire from Thursday night (October 9).
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jashim Uddin, commanding officer of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-64 in Ukhiya, confirmed the incident, saying that they are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining heightened vigilance along the border.
Local Union Parishad Chairman M Gofur Uddin Chowdhury said that since around 11 pm Thursday, gunfire has been heard across the border near Dhamankhali, Balukhali, Rahmater Beel, Nolbonia, and Anjuman Para areas under Palongkhali Union.
A similar situation has been reported along the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari Upazila. Many residents have taken shelter inside their homes out of fear, while others spent the night in fear.
