Campaigning for the long-awaited Chattogram University Central Students' Union (CUCSU), Hall Councils, and student representative elections to the Senate has gathered momentum, with candidates intensifying their outreach efforts ahead of the October 15 polls, reports BSS.

Candidates and their supporters are now actively meeting voters, exchanging greetings, and conducting door-to-door campaigns across the dormitories.

Many contenders have said they are receiving encouraging responses from fellow students as enthusiasm grows on campus.

Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Mohammad Monir Uddin said all necessary preparations have been completed to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election. "We expect the polls to be held smoothly and successfully," he added.

According to the election office, a total of 27,516 students, 16,184 from nine male dormitories and 11,332 from six female dormitories are eligible to cast their votes.

This election marks the resumption of student representation at Chattogram University after a 35-year break, and the campus has taken on a festive look as campaign activities intensify. Dormitories, open spaces and common areas are buzzing with excitement as students discuss manifestos, slogans, and leadership promises.

Many students have expressed hope that the revival of CUCSU will finally give them a voice in addressing campus-related issues.

"There was no one to raise our problems, whether academic, food or accommodation-related," said Jashim Uddin, a student of the International Relations Department. "Now, with CUCSU returning, we hope our voices will be heard."

Arif Ullah, a Bangla Department student, echoed similar optimism. "There were student organizations before, but no representative body. Through this election, I believe our problems will be addressed," he said.

Chief Election Commissioner Monir Uddin said a total of 908 candidates are contesting - 415 for CUCSU positions and 493 for Hall Council posts.

In CUCSU, 24 candidates are vying for Vice-President (VP), 22 for General Secretary (GS) and 21 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS).

In the Hall Council polls, 26 candidates are contesting for VP, 28 for GS and 30 for AGS. In six female halls, 12 candidates each are running for VP and AGS, and 13 for GS. Overall, 12 panels are competing across both CUCSU and Hall Council elections.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Yahia Akter described the election as a historic event after a 35-year hiatus.

"This election is a milestone for Chattogram University. Despite challenges, we have ensured a level playing field for all candidates, and the positive momentum will continue," he said.

Established in 1970, CUCSU has historically played a vital role in upholding student rights, nurturing leadership, and promoting dialogue between students and the university administration.

No CUCSU elections have been held since 1990 due to issues including campus violence, organizational instability, and administrative hurdles, which left the union inactive for decades.

With the polls now set to return, students and university authorities alike are hopeful that CUCSU will reclaim its role as the legitimate voice of the Chattogram University student community.
