National Citizen Party’s Chief Organiser (northern region) Sarjis Alam, has said there is no safe exit “except death” for some advisers.
“Some advisers seem to believe they can simply perform their duties half-heartedly and exit through the upcoming election. They are in their positions standing on the blood of so many martyrs. If they act this way, they will not be able to face the people of this country. There is no safe exit except death. Wherever they go in the world, the people of Bangladesh will find them,” he said.
The NCP leader was speaking to reporters after attending a coordination meeting of NCP district and upazila units at the Naogaon Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium on Tuesday.
Sarjis alleged that the Election Commission is rushing to register a party called “Jatiya League” but the party’s existence amounts to nothing more than a small room beside a toilet.
He said when registering any party, the old criteria cannot simply be followed. “Everything must be thoroughly verified. If this is an attempt to rehabilitate the Awami League, the people and the NCP will never accept it.”
The NCP leader said if the good people of Bangladesh wish to come together and form another political party, they are free to do so. “We have no objection. But let me make one thing clear: any version of the Awami League is completely irrelevant in post-uprising Bangladesh. The NCP will never accept that,” he added.
Referring to the upcoming national election, he said the NCP will contest it with Shapla (water lily) symbol.
“There is no legal barrier to using the Shapla symbol,” Sarjis said, adding that despite being an independent constitutional body, the EC is now behaving arbitrarily or perhaps acting under pressure after the uprising.
