The MPO-affiliated Education Nationalization Alliance has strongly opposed the recent government notification increasing the house rent for teachers and employees in MPO (Monthly Payment Order)-affiliated private educational institutions by Tk 500. The Ministry of Finance published the circular on October 5, confirming the rent rise from Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,500. However, the teachers’ body has rejected the hike, deeming it insufficient.
Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, president of the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalization Alliance and member secretary of the Bangladesh Madrasa Teacher-Employees Forum, expressed his discontent on social media. He confirmed that the notification is legitimate but firmly rejected the increase, calling it an inadequate step in addressing the concerns of MPO-affiliated teachers and employees.
In response, the MPO-affiliated teachers are organizing a sit-in protest outside the National Press Club on October 12, demanding a 20% house rent increase, Tk 1,500 medical allowance, and a 75% festival allowance for employees. These demands were initially raised during a meeting with the Ministry of Education on August 13, where the Alliance and education leaders agreed to push for these reforms.
The Ministry of Education has already forwarded a proposal for a 20% house rent increase for teachers to the Ministry of Finance, which is still under review. Syed AZ Morshed Ali, Deputy Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, confirmed the submission of this file to the Ministry of Finance.
Earlier, in August, around 100,000 teachers and employees staged a rally in front of the National Press Club, demanding an end to discrimination in the MPO system, a house rent hike in line with government standards, medical and festival allowances, and the nationalization of educational institutions.
