Baroness Rosie Winterton, the British Trade Envoy, has arrived in Dhaka for a five-day visit aimed at strengthening trade and investment ties between the UK and Bangladesh. The British High Commission confirmed her arrival on Sunday.
Throughout her visit, Baroness Winterton is set to engage with prominent Bangladeshi officials, including Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, Education Adviser Prof. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, and Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfe Siddiqui. These discussions will center on advancing UK-Bangladesh economic reforms and boosting trade and investment.
She will also meet leaders of key political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party (NCP), reaffirming the UK’s long-term commitment to Bangladesh’s growth.
In Dhaka and Chattogram, Baroness Winterton will meet stakeholders in aviation, higher education, renewable energy, and defense. Her visit will also include touring UK-related investment projects in Chattogram, where these ventures are creating jobs and strengthening supply chains in both nations.
One of the key topics during the visit will be the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme. Under this program, Bangladeshi exports will receive duty-free access to the UK market until 2029, ensuring continued competitiveness during Bangladesh’s transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
Additionally, Baroness Winterton will meet with British International Investments, the UK Development Finance Agency, and local partners to highlight the UK's contributions to green finance and sustainable infrastructure development.
The British High Commission emphasized that the visit aims to support Bangladesh’s long-term economic reform agenda and strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations for mutual prosperity.
