The Shia community brought out the traditional Tazia procession from Hoseni Dalan in Old Dhaka on Sunday morning, marking the holy Ashura with mourning and remembrance, amid heightened security measures.
Thousands of Shia Muslims gathered at the historic Imambara from the early hours, dressed in black to mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. Chanting “Hai Husain, Hai Husain,” they moved in unison through the city streets, commemorating the tragic events of 10 Muharram in the year 61 Hijri.
Mohammad Ali, a regular participant in the procession, said, “Every year, I join this procession to spiritually connect with the sacrifice of Imam Hussain. We will never forget how he and his family were martyred for truth and justice.”
The procession was scheduled to reach Dhanmondi Lake Karbala via Hoseni Dalan Gate No. 1, Bakshi Bazar Lane, Lalbagh Crossing, Shaheed Mazar Road, Etimkhana Mor, Azimpur Crossing, Nilkhet Mor, Mirpur Road, Dhaka College, Science Laboratory, BGB Gate No. 4, and Sat Masjid Road.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), along with SWAT teams, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), army personnel, and regular police, ensured tight security throughout the route. The DMP also imposed a ban on carrying sharp weapons and the use of firecrackers during the procession, citing public safety concerns.
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who, along with his family members and 72 followers, embraced martyrdom in the desert of Karbala while standing against injustice and tyranny.
