Those whose collaterals will be forfeited if they run for the national elections want proportional representation (PR) or proportional elections, said BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed.
He said this at a rally organized at Chunkutia Girls' High School ground in South Keraniganj, Dhaka on Saturday.
Addressing NCP leaders, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "Thye’re saying if there are no fundamental reforms, if there is no trial, there will be no elections. They are saying if there is that Election Commission, there will be no elections; there will be no elections if the situation is not right. We need only be advised on what to do to hold elections. Just don't do it, what will happen if we don't do it? Whereas we talk about reforms, we talk about trials, many people are saying we don't want reforms, we want to delay trials. We are only holding elections - who are saying these things, their collaterals will be forfeited when they come to the elections”
He said, “Those who are saying these things are the same ones who are talking about proportional elections. They are making these statements based on speculation. They are saying that the people of Bangladesh want proportional elections. What is a proportional election, do any of you know?'
Salahuddin Ahmed further said, 'Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Hasina used to talk about ‘spirit.’ Don't talk about this ‘Spirit.’ Don't sell ‘Spirit.’ You are not the only ones who are partners in July. You must not forget the contribution of BNP leaders and activists.”
This member of the BNP standing committee said, “Even those known as friends of the Awami League now go to the Reform Commission and talk big, but their supplies are gone in the evening.”
He said, “The dreams of those who will prolong their power without votes by making excuses in the name of reforms and justice will remain a nightmare. Make the reforms that are needed for the elections and hold elections. If necessary, there will be a struggle for democracy again.”
