The Election Commission (EC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda.
Md Ashadul Haque, assistant director of the EC’s Public Relations Division, issued a condolence message to the media on Saturday.
The Bangladesh Election Commission, with deep sorrow and grief, announces that former Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda has passed away today (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un).
He breathed his last this morning at his residence in Gulshan, Dhaka. His body is currently being kept at United Hospital.
He was 83 years old. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, and numerous admirers, said the release.
ATM Shamsul Huda breathed his last around 9:00 am on Saturday. He was later taken to United Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
According to family sources, his namaz-e-janaza will be held once his daughter returns from the United States.
ATM Shamsul Huda served as the Chief Election Commissioner who oversaw the ninth parliamentary election in Bangladesh, held in 2008. His tenure is often remembered for efforts to restore credibility to the electoral process following a period of political turmoil.
Born in 1941, Huda began his public service career by joining the Pakistan Civil Service in 1966. Following Bangladesh’s independence, he transitioned into the Bangladesh Civil Service and held various important government roles.
During his distinguished career, he served as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Bagerhat, Secretary to the Ministries of Water Resources and Finance. Also, he held the position of Managing Director of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Bank.
He retired from government service in 2000.
