Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has declared that justice and political reform must precede any future elections in Bangladesh. "We will ensure the trial of Sheikh Hasina, Awami League leaders and activists, and the police who shot our brothers and sisters on the ground of Bangladesh. First the trial, then the reform, and only then the election,” he said.
Nahid made the remarks during a meeting with the families of the martyrs of the July Uprising, held at the Tourism Motel conference room in Bogra on Saturday morning. The gathering commemorated those killed in the political unrest, while also outlining the party’s reform agenda.
Speaking about the July Declaration, Nahid emphasized that the government must guarantee political, social, and economic security for the families of the victims. "It’s not just this government—any government that comes to power must take responsibility. That is why we are advancing the July Declaration," he said.
According to Nahid, the July Declaration will be based on the voices of the martyrs and their families and will be integrated into the national constitution. “This declaration will outline the reforms that Bangladesh urgently needs—across governance, justice, and institutional accountability,” he added.
Also present at the event were Senior Joint Convener Samanta Sharmin, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, North Region Chief Organizer Shargis Alam, and South Zone Chief Organizer Hasnat Abdullah. The leadership reiterated the NCP’s commitment to justice, structural reform, and people-centered politics.
The NCP’s position signals a growing call among opposition forces for justice and systemic change before engaging in any electoral process under the current or future administrations.
