The prices of rice and vegetables soared at the capital’s kitchen markets on Friday, hitting consumers hard.
Rice prices have been on the rise since Eid-ul-Azha, while vegetable prices climbed further over the past week.
Meanwhile, chicken and egg prices saw a slight decline, offering minimal relief to consumers.
This market scenario was observed on Friday in several areas of the capital, including Mirpur-12, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-13, Pallabi, and Shewrapara.
Shop owners said rice prices have seen a slight increase nationwide, with traders reporting a hike of Tk300–400 per 50kg sack since Eid-ul-Azha.
Coarse rice varieties like BR-28 and Parija were selling for Tk58–65 per kg, while fine-quality Jirashail was priced at Tk74–80 per kg. Miniket was available at Tk76–84 per kg, and Kataribhog ranged between Tk70 and Tk76 per kg.
Md Polsah of Matlab Store in Mirpur-13 said the prices of Paizam, BR-28, and Miniket rice have increased by up to Tk8 per kg.
He said rice prices have been rising in phases since Eid-ul-Azha.
Chicken and egg prices had been declining during Eid. Although the price of Sonali chicken has edged up slightly over the past week, broiler chicken remains steady at Tk150–160 per kg.
The price of Sonali chicken rose to Tk300 per kg, up from Tk260–280 per kg just a couple of weeks ago.
Egg prices dropped to Tk110–115 per dozen in some major markets, compared to Tk120 per dozen previously.
Onions were priced at Tk50–55 per kg, potatoes at Tk25 per kg, local garlic at Tk120 per kg, and imported garlic at Tk220 per kg.
However, prices of nearly all other vegetables have risen.
Vegetable seller Amirul Islam said some varieties have increased by Tk10 to 20 per kg compared to last week.
Yardlong beans, spiny gourd, and bitter gourd were selling for Tk80–100 per kg, while ribbed gourd, snake gourd, papaya, pointed gourd, and okra ranged from Tk50 to 80 per kg.
