Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Friday morning told reporters that holding general elections under the existing socio-political circumstances is impossible.
Before holding elections, the government must ensure every candidate enjoys equal rights, and implement reforms in crucial areas, Shafiqur said at the Saidpur domestic airport in Nilphamari.
The whole country is now rife with political violence, the Jamaat chief said referring to a recent attack on a police station in Patgram, Lalmonirhat to free jailed extortionists. The chief of the police station claimed many of the attackers were linked to BNP.
“This kind of violent situation is now prevailing throughout the country. How can elections be arranged in this situation?” Shafiqur questioned.
Jamaat too wants to see a free and fair general election, but first, it is essential to implement fundamental reforms and create a suitable atmosphere, he noted.
