Officials and employees of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) have resumed work, which has satisfied the government.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed urged NBR officials to continue their duties impartially.
He made the call while talking to journalists at his office in the Finance Division on Monday afternoon.
The Finance Adviser said, “In the interest of the nation, such actions should never be taken. Differences in opinion may exist, but shutting down ports is not acceptable. The NBR officials’ movement that led to such a shutdown was unjustified and caused significant damage to the country.”
In response to a question, he clarified that it was not due to government intervention that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation against six NBR officials.
“The ACC acted on its own accord. Only they can comment on the matter. The government is not interfering. The ACC is investigating many individuals now.
Following a stern government warning and mounting pressure from the country's top business leaders, officials of the NBR have withdrawn their shutdown on Sunday evening.
The announcement came from the NBR Reform Unity Council after a meeting with business leaders at the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) in Tejgaon. Before this meeting, the business leaders sat with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed.
