Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, feels that more discussions on PR can take place.
“Discussions can take place regarding PR (proportional representation), and PR activities may continue. However, if anyone tries to create a conflict over the issue of PR that goes against the democratic aspirations of the people of the country, I would say they do not believe in the ideals of Bangladesh. Rather, they believe only in their personal and partisan interests.”
He made these remarks on Monday while addressing the general meeting of the Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal at the Diploma Engineers Institute in Dhaka.
Moyeen Khan said, “Those who speak high and mighty these days often forget that it was the student community who made the greatest sacrifices in the democratic movement of this country—and 80 to 90 percent of them represented the BNP. Yet they never made a show of it, instead identifying themselves as representatives of ordinary people. Bangladesh is not the private property of any individual or group. A year ago, the Awami League suffered the consequences of entertaining such a misconception. If anyone still holds on to that same delusion, it will be a grave mistake.”
He further said that a situation has arisen today where a certain group of people seem to consider themselves the owners of Bangladesh.
The BNP leader also stated, “Those who speak of democracy should come to the streets and see for themselves that more than 100,000 cases have been filed against BNP leaders and activists, something that hasn’t happened to any other political party. Nearly five million BNP leaders and activists have been accused and relentlessly pursued by the police.”
