The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched corruption probes against key figures leading the protest against NBR reforms, including Additional Commissioner Hasan Tarek Rikabdar and NBR Member AKM Badiul Alam, reports the Daily Sun.
ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain announced the development at a press briefing on Sunday, saying total six NBR officials have been put under scanner.
The probes have been launched following proper scrutiny and with an unbiased approach, the ACC chief confirmed.
The corruption watchdog chief said a number NBR officials and members have been taking hefty bribes from many owners of businesses and other organisations to help them evade taxes. These practices incurred huge revenue losses for the government for decades, while accumulating huge undisclosed wealth for the corrupt tax officials.
In other cases, tax officials would take bribes for refunding taxes and returning overpaid revenues to taxpayers, Akhtar Hossain alleged.
