Mentioning that there is now a public aspiration for unity among Islamists, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim said that a united Islamic alliance will become the main political force in the future.
He came up with the observation while addressing a grand rally organised by Islami Andolan Bangladesh at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
Informing that a process is underway to form an alliance not only among Islamic parties but also with various patriotic groups for the upcoming election, the Charmonai Pir said, “If we can form this alliance, state power will come into our hands in the future. We have shed blood repeatedly, but we haven't succeeded—because every time, we made mistakes in choosing our leaders and policies. Over the past 54 years, we have seen many parties rule the country, but we have yet to bring an Islamic party to power. Now, there is a growing public expectation for unity among Islamists.”
“From the beginning, I have been advocating for consolidating all Islamist votes into one ballot box. In the upcoming election, not only Islamic parties but also many other patriotic political parties may join this single-ballot policy, InshaAllah. If we can contest the election together, if we can forge effective unity, then Islamists will indeed become the main political force in Bangladesh. The responsibility of governing the state will come into our hands, InshaAllah,” he continued.
He further added that the next election should be held under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, where each party receives parliamentary representation proportionate to their vote share.
“This is now the demand of the people and most political parties,” he added.
