The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a series of nationwide programmes to commemorate the first anniversary of the July–August 2024 mass uprising, which the party claims led to the fall of the Awami League’s “fascist regime.”
At a press conference held at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi revealed that the party will organise at least 22 events across the country throughout July. These include discussion meetings, blood donation drives, street theatre, graffiti art, football tournaments, children’s rights programmes, and public awareness campaigns on dengue and COVID-19 prevention.
The observance will commence on July 1 with a discussion at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre, where political representatives and families of those killed or injured during the 2024 uprising will be invited. It will conclude with a central victory procession on August 6, jointly organised by all BNP-affiliated organisations. Rizvi declared that August 6 marked a “historic victory” for the people, claiming that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee the country on that day.
To coordinate the activities, the party has formed a 58-member committee named the ‘July–August Mass Uprising, Mourning and Victory Anniversary Observance Committee,’ led by Rizvi as convener and Dhaka University Professor Dr Morshed Hasan Khan as member secretary.
Additionally, seven sub-committees have been created to manage specific areas such as management, publicity, discipline, reception, communication, hospitality, and office affairs. The sub-committee members, approved by Rizvi, were announced on the BNP’s official media cell Facebook page.
Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee will lead the Management Sub-Committee with Dr Abdullah Al Mamun as member secretary. The Publicity and Media Sub-Committee will be headed by Professor Dr Maudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, with Atiqur Rahman Ruman as member secretary. Sultan Salahuddin Tuku will oversee the Discipline Sub-Committee, assisted by Aminul Haque. Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohail and Sama Obaid will lead the Reception Sub-Committee. Dr Mahdi Amin and Ehsan Mahmud will manage the Communication Sub-Committee. Syed Emran Saleh Prince and Nurul Islam Nayan will head the Hospitality Sub-Committee, while Advocate Abdus Salam Azad and Md Abdus Sattar Patwari will lead the Office Sub-Committee.
The BNP has urged all supporters and political allies to actively participate in the events, portraying the uprising as a pivotal chapter in the country's struggle for democratic restoration.
