NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan said we cannot do everything all the time even if we want to.
“Tax exemptions are being given in various ways to prevent the price of essential commodities from increasing. If taxes are not collected, how will the government function? Therefore, if the budget size increases, the tax pressure on the people in some way or the other increases. It is also difficult to get out of this. For this reason, the NBR is working to create a business-friendly environment,” he said.
“Till Wednesday, Tk 3.53 lakh crore has been collected in taxes of the current fiscal year. There are only two days left in the fiscal year,” he added.
He said this at a seminar titled 'Food Security and VAT of Marginalized Populations' organized by the Youth Policy Network at the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) office in Paltan, the capital, on Thursday afternoon.
The NBR Chairman said, “The movement is hampering revenue collection to some extent. We will all work for the country and protect it’s interest. Whatever reform we make, whatever law we make, it must be done in the interest of the country. Any movement or struggle should be in the interest of the state. Any reform should be in the interest of the state. We must not do anything for ourselves, but for the interest of the country.”
The NBR Chairman also said, “We have to reduce tariffs. This time the budget is about Tk 8 lakh crore. As a result, 3 lakh crore taka of debt will be added. The debt has increased further. The next generation will have to pay this debt.”
